A class of continua that are not attractors of any IFS
This paper presents a sufficient condition for a continuum in to be
embeddable in in such a way that its image is not an attractor of any
iterated function system. An example of a continuum in that is not an
attractor of any weakly contracting iterated function system is also given
POLSKIE BADANIA NAD POSTACIÄ METROPOLITY ANDRZEJA SZEPTYCKIEGO
Andrei Sheptytsâkyi has been the object of interests of scholars in Poland of both Polish and Ukrainian origin. Polish studies on metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsâkyi have begun form publications of historical sources. Th ey have been prepared by scholars who have performed fi rst analysis of facts connected with his life and activity. Th e most important Polish researches on metropolitan started aft er 1989/1990. Since then a number of monographies concentrating on various aspects of his activity have been prepared. However, a majority of Polish publications on the topic have been single papers each dealing with a particular problem of Sheptytsâkyiâs life and thought. Th ose have rarely been continued by their authors. Further research on metropolitan requires more eff ective cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian historians in order to propose the most complementary picture of Sheptytsâkyiâs personality.Andrei Sheptytsâkyi has been the object of interests of scholars in Poland of both Polish and Ukrainian origin. Topological classification of scattered IFS-attractors
We study countable compact spaces as potential attractors of iterated
function systems. We give an example of a convergent sequence in the real line
which is not an IFS-attractor and for each countable ordinal we show
that a countable compact space of height can be embedded in the real
line so that it becomes the attractor of an IFS. On the other hand, we show
that a scattered compact metric space of limit height is never an
IFS-attractor

Development of Niobium Boron grain retainer for aluminium silicon alloys
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel UniversityAluminium castings with a large grain structure have poor mechanical properties which are primarily due to casting defects as opposed to fine grain structure. The grain refinement practice using chemical addition is well established for wrought alloys, however in the case of casting alloys, the practice of adding grain refiners and the impact on castability is not well established. The addition of well known Al-5Ti-B grain refiner to casting alloys with silicon (Si) content above 3 wt.% is not effective. This is believed to be due to the chemical reaction between Ti and Si. The current research aim is to find an alternative, but effective, chemical phase which can refine Al-Si alloy grains. Based on a crystallographic database search and intermetallic phases found in AluminiumâNiobium-Boron, there exists several iso-structural phases similar to those of Al3Ti and TiB2. We have selected a phase which exhibits chemical phase stability with Si (below 900 oC) and developed a potential novel grain refiner Nb-B for Al-Si cast alloys. Various Al-Si binary alloys and a commercial sourced LM6 (Al-10Si-Mg) cast alloys were cast after novel grain refiner addition to the melt. It is the first time that such fine grain structures were achieved for Al-Si alloys when Si >4wt.%. It is believed that Nb-B grain refiner enhances the heterogeneous nuclei in the melt. The effectiveness of this grain refiner under various cooling rate conditions is investigated to simulate various practical
casting conditions. Due to increased heterogeneous nuclei density, a fine grain structure is also obtained at low cooling rates and the grain size is less sensitive to the cooling rate. The processing of high Si containing alloys for complex shaped castings with reduced defects, fine grain structure and improved mechanical properties are now possible.Isambard Research Scholarships
The Hot Struggle Over the Cold Waters: The Strategic Position of the Arctic Region During and After the Cold War
The Arctic became a hot spot on the global map and discussion over the cold waters became an important issue in international relations. During the Cold War, as it is today, the Arctic was a separate area of rivalry between the superpowers. Despite the fact that today\u27s debate is based on different issues, including sovereignty over the region, potential access to natural resources and the status of international waters, there is still a strong military component to the competing interests, as there was during the Cold War
Samohistorizacija putem fotografije i dokumentiranja. Arhiva StanisĆawa Ostoje- Kotkowskog u Nacionalnom muzeju u VarĆĄavi
The article is based on the research I carried out on the archive of StanisĆaw Ostoja-Kotkowski (1922â1994), the Cold War-era Polish-Australian artist living in South Australia, which is currently kept in the National Museum in Warsaw. Ostoja-Kotkowski was a pioneer in electronic art, kinetic sculpture, laser art, computer graphics and light art in the 1960s and 1970s. The article analyzes the archive in the context of âself-historicizationâ (Badovinac), used by this Ă©migrĂ© artist to create his artistic identity in both Australia and Poland. The archive proves that self-documentation by the less-known creators from peripheral hubs is helpful to contemporary researchers in deconstructing dominating historical narratives. The use of photographs in the archive is seen through Amelia Jonesâ notion of âperformative documentâ, which helps to see images of ephemeral performances and actions as equal to the works of art themselves.Älanak se temelji na istraĆŸivanju koje sam provela radeÄi na arhivi StanisĆawa Ostoje-Kotkowskog (1922.â 1994.)
